OKLAHOMA CITY – Avery Jackson highlighted five from Oklahoma City University honored by the Sooner Athletic Conference on the men's basketball all-conference squad.
Jackson became SAC freshman of the year and a second-team all-conference honoree, while the Stars' Kori Guest made the third team. Dravon Clayborn and Brandon Jackson took honorable-mention all-SAC acclaim, and Avery Jackson and Jack McWilliams collected all-freshman accolades.
Avery Jackson joined Terence Bonhomme in 2013-14 and Eddie Smith in 2019-20 as previous Stars to gain SAC freshman of the year awards. Jackson, a freshman political science major from Frisco, Texas, tops Oklahoma City with 17.0 points a game to go along with averages of 5.2 rebounds and 1.39 steals a game this season. His season highs were 32 points against Ottawa-Arizona on Nov. 4 and 10 rebounds against Mid-America Christian on Jan. 14.
Avery Jackson is set to become the first freshman to top OCU in scoring since Steve Wiedower averaged a team-high 13.4 points a game in 1983-84. He has scored the most by an Oklahoma City freshman since Jon Manning compiled 563 points, scoring 21.7 points a game, in 1974-75.
Guest, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., studying criminal justice, became a three-time all-SAC performer. Guest has produced 15.1 points and 6.9 rebounds a game in 2022-23. Guest has turned in career bests with 31 points at Wayland Baptist and eight 3-pointers against Science & Arts. Guest took conference player of the week for Jan. 2-8.
Clayborn has put up 11.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.61 steals a contest on the season. Clayborn, a senior from Evanston, Ill., majoring in business administration, has career highs of 22 points vs. Southwestern Christian, 12 rebounds at Science & Arts and 10 assists at Southwestern Assemblies of God.
Brandon Jackson has supplied the Stars with 14.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.31 steals per game on the season. Jackson, a junior human performance major from Westmont, Calif., posted 34 points against Panhandle State, 12 rebounds at Wayland Baptist and five treys against Mid-America Christian among his finest performances this season.
McWilliams has contributed 5.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest in his debut season as a collegian. McWilliams, at 7-foot-1, is the fifth 7-footer at OCU ever, joining Eddie Jackson (1962-65), Norm Russell (1970-73), Rodney Henderson (1989-90) and Tate Decker (2000-01). McWilliams' season-best 13 points came against Mid-America Christian and 11 rebounds against John Brown (Ark.).
