OCU vs. Central Christian men's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP

• Oklahoma City University will host Central Christian (Kan.) in the quarterfinal round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday at Abe Lemons Arena.
• OCU is the third seed in the SAC Tournament and the Stars received an opening round bye while CCCK is the 11th seed. The Tigers upset No. 6 seed Texas Wesleyan 69-64 on Tuesday night in Fort Worth.
• OCU swept the regular season series against CCCK, winning 72-60 on Nov. 18 in McPherson. Kan. and 60-57 on Jan. 20 at Abe Lemons Arena.
• Tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 for students. All tickets must be purchased via OCU's HomeTown Ticketing portal. No tickets are to be purchased via cash on site. OCU students, faculty and staff gain admission to all OCU regular-season home athletics events free of charge with their ID 
• Fans will be required to wear masks in place over their faces while observing social distancing. No concessions will be offered


ABOUT THE STARS

• Oklahoma City University (16-13) enters the SAC Tournament riding a 3-game winning streak, The Stars have posted a 10-5 record since resuming play after the holiday break.
• OCU snapped No. 10 ranked Science & Arts eight-game winning streak with a dramatic 103-102 win over the Drovers in the regular season finale for both teams last Saturday in Chickasha.
• Three players topped 20 points in the win over USAO with senior guard Rashuan Coleman and senior forward Romario Spence each contributing 24 points and senior guard Dravon Clayborn finishing with 22 points.
• OCU's five starters all played 30-plus minutes and contributed all but two points in the win with junior forward Kori Guest contributing 16 points and senior guard Ryan Birt finishing with 15 points. Junior forward Dadrian Hoambrecker contributed two points in a reserve role for the Stars.
• Coleman also finished with a team-high 11 rebounds. He has recorded double-doubles in 16 of 27 games this season with 12 in his last 13 games played.
• The Stars made 38 of 74 field goal attempts (51.4%) against the Drovers, marking their fifth-best shooting outing of the season. OCU is 5-0 this season when shooting 50% or better on field goal attempts.
• The 20 assists in the win over USAO ties for the second most by the Stars this season. Previously OCU recorded 28 assists in a win over Langston in November with 20 assist games against Southwestern Assemblies of God, Oklahoma Panhandle State and Southwestern Christian.
• OCU recorded 10 steals in the win over USAO, tying for the third most steals in a game this season. The Stars recorded a season-high 12 steals in a 73-62 win over John Brown (Ark.) on Jan. 25.
• OCU leads the SAC and ranks 10th in the NAIA rankings in opponent 3-point field goal percentage (179 of 616, 29.1%).
• OCU ranks sixth in the SAC in team offense (77.0 ppg) and eighth in team defense (76.6 ppg).
 
ABOUT THE TIGERS

• Central Christian (19-12) entered Tuesday's SAC Tournament opening round game as the No. 11 seed but the Tigers never trailed in a 69-64 upset of No. 6 seed Texas Wesleyan at the Sid Richardson Center in Fort Worth.
• The Tigers entered the SAC Tournament having lost 14 of their previous 16 games.
• Three players scored in double-figures in the win with junior Isaiah Rivera leading the way with 22 points. Junior Demario Moore contributed 17 points and senior Darrell Bryant finished with 11 points.
• Rivera ranks ninth in the SAC in scoring (15.2 ppg).
• CCCK made 23 of 50 (46%) field goal attempts and nine of 19 (47.4%) 3-pointers in the win.
• CCCK ranks ninth in the SAC in team offense (73.3 ppg) and seventh in team defense (75.6 ppg).



ABOUT THE COACHES

Mark Berokoff (first season with OCU)
• Mark Berokoff guided Randall to three national championships and a national runner-up finish in nine years as head coach of the Saints. Berokoff's record with Randall was 147-122.  Randall regularly challenged SAC squads and defeated OCU twice during that time 
• Berokoff coached five national player of the year honorees, 16 all-Americans, three national tournament outstanding player award winners and one scholar all-American with Randall. Berkoff was two-time national coach of the year
• Berokoff's coaching career includes experience on the high school, college and professional levels. His combined head-coaching record over 19 years in the college and prep ranks is 372-199
 
Tony Romero (221-174, 13th season with CCCK) 
• Notched his 200th career win Oct. 31, 2020 in a 93-61 victory over Calvary (Mo.) in McPherson, Kan.
• Took over at Central Christian's head coach for the 2009-10 season after spending the previous five seasons on the Tigers' bench as an assistant
• Played at CCCK from 2000-04 where he collected all-conference acclaim from the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference as a senior
• An Oklahoma City native, Romero graduated from Del City High School in 2000
