Stars head to Baldwin City, Kan., for first road game of season

THE MATCHUP
• Oklahoma City University will travel to Baldwin City, Kan., to take on Baker in men's basketball for the first road matchup of the 2018-19 schedule
• This is the first meeting between OCU and Baker since the 1985-86 season
• Tickets will be on sale for $10 per person

ABOUT THE STARS

• OCU crushed Manhattan Christian (Kan.) 116-75 on Nov. 2 at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars had their most points scored under Vinay Patel and most since a 120-85 rout of Mid-America Christian on Nov. 4, 2003 at Abe Lemons Arena
• Elijah Christman, a 6-foot-5 senior, is the Stars' leading performer scoring 29 points and securing 10 rebounds against Manhattan Christian on Nov. 2. Christman made seven 3s in the season-opening. He collected his first SAC player of the week honor after producing career highs in scoring, rebounding and treys
Joe Clarke, a 6-3 senior, scored 25 points for OCU in the win Nov. 2, shooting 52.6 percent from the floor and 100 percent from the free-throw line. Clarke had six rebounds, two assists and a block
Mark Howell, a 5-11 senior, dished out 11 assists in the Stars' first game of the season to go with six points, four rebounds and two steals
• OCU has been slotted at No. 5 in the preseason NAIA Division I rankings. Oklahoma City has made 24 NAIA Division I Tournament appearances and won six national championships in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008
• The Stars have been picked to finish first place in the Sooner Athletic Conference according to the preseason coaches poll. OCU owns 13 SAC regular-season titles and nine SAC Tournament crowns

• OCU downed Baker 109-84 in the only other meeting between the two schools during the 1985-86 season
 
ABOUT THE WILDCATS

• Baker has started off the 2018-19 season 0-2, dropping their opener to Ottawa (Kan.) 84-69 and then losing to Kansas Wesleyan 67-55
• Vandy Hopson, a 6-6 junior, leads the team in scoring averaging 12.5 points per game. Hopson scored 17 points against Ottawa on Oct. 20
• Charles Fisher, a 6-1 junior, is the Wildcats' leading rebounder with 14
• Clae Martin, a 6-2 senior, leads Baker with a .500 shooting percentage from 3-point land. Martin made three 3-pointers against Ottawa

 
ABOUT THE COACHES

Vinay Patel (61-31, fourth season with OCU)
• Patel has guided three OCU all-Americans, including the Stars' first first-teamer since 2008, 2017 Sooner Athletic Conference player of the year, the 2017 and 2018 SAC co-defensive player of the year, a finalist for the Dark Horse Dunker competition, 11 all-conference performers and four academic all-SAC choices. He is the 2018 John Hudson SAC coach of the year
• Before coming to OCU, he spent one season as Rogers State's assistant coach and aided the Hillcats to a 20-8 season led by the conference player of the year
• Patel spent nine years as assistant before serving as the head coach at West Texas A&M. During that time, West Texas went to the NCAA Division II Tournament five times, won the Lone Star Conference championship and took two Lone Star South Division titles
 
Sean Dooley (seventh season with BU)
• Dooley's 64 career wins at Baker ranks him sixth all-time at the school
• Under Dooley's leadership he helped develop freshman Javeion Gray into the 2013-14 Heart Freshman of the Year honor and EJ Carter was named to the Honorable Mention All-Heart squad. Carter also was awarded with the prestigious NAIA Scholar-Athlete award for his work off of the basketball court.
• Dooley began his collegiate coaching career when he assisted another NAIA Hall of Fame Coach, Larry Holley, at William Jewell College. Dooley was an assistant at Jewell for three seasons, and held multiple titles while on staff. Due to the team's success, several Cardinals were recognized for their play, including 10 named to the Heart of America All Conference team, and four named NAIA Division II All-Americans.
