OCU vs. Oklahoma Baptist men's basketball preview

Stars host NAIA's seventh-ranked team

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University challenges Sooner Athletic Conference rival Oklahoma Baptist, ranked seventh in NAIA Division I.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, while OCU students, faculty and staff are allowed into all regular-season OCU athletics events for free with their ID. If the Stars score 70 points, fans will get a prize from Raising Cane's. For the OCU athletics visitors guide, click here.

ABOUT THE STARS: Southwestern Christian snuck past OCU 79-78 on Thursday in Bethany, Okla. The Stars (6-5, 2-3 SAC play) turned 18 offensive rebounds into a 22-0 advantage in second-chance points.
Tharone Chilton, a 6-foot-2 senior from Tulsa, Okla., established new season bests of 30 points, eight rebounds and 13 field goals. Chilton also grabbed a season-high three steals. He records 16.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.46 steals a contest.
Gary Inglett, a 6-6 senior from Ardmore, Okla., produced 22 points and 15 rebounds. Inglett turns in 17.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists a game. Inglett ranks fifth in defensive rebounds per game (7.4) and ninth in overall rebounding in the NAIA. Jamil Donovan, a 5-7 junior from Oklahoma City, had a team-high six assists. Donovan averages 4.5 assists a game, good for 20th nationally.

OCU has been projected to finish fourth in the SAC by league coaches. Oklahoma City owns six NAIA national championships won in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.
Oklahoma City leads the all-time series with Oklahoma Baptist 63-45. Oklahoma Baptist won 84-70 on March 1, 2014 at Abe Lemons Arena in the last contest between the two teams.
 
ABOUT THE BISON: Oklahoma Baptist took a 63-60 loss to Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Thursday in Shawnee, Okla. OBU (14-3, 3-2 SAC) led 58-57 on Aaron Abram's free throws with 2:36 left, but Marcus Price gave the visitors the lead on a basket with 2:21 to go.
Ty Allen, a 6-2 senior, generated 15 points while hitting all five of his free throws. Allen spearheads OBU with 20.0 points and 3.9 rebounds a game. Bryon Miller, a 6-5 junior, had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Miller averages 16.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
The Bison held the No. 7 spot in this week's national rankings. Oklahoma Baptist tops the NAIA with a 79.8 team free-throw percentage and 1.59-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. OBU is expected to finish third in the league according to the preseason SAC coaches poll.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps owns a 51-43 record in his fourth season as OCU coach. He led the Stars to the SAC Tournament title and an NAIA Division I Tournament appearance in 2012-13. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of five conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 24-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Doug Tolin has guided Oklahoma Baptist to a 412-112 record and the 2010 NAIA Division I title in his 14th season at the helm. Tolin's overall coaching record stands at 732-338 in 37 years as a head coach. He will be inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame this season.
