Stars split doubleheader with Wayland Baptist

OCU now 17-6 in SAC play

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University split a doubleheader with Wayland Baptist (Texas) 7-3 Thursday at Wilder Field.
The Stars, ranked No. 10 NAIA baseball, topped Wayland Baptist 7-3 in the first game before being shut out by the Pioneers 2-0 in the nightcap. The split moves OCU to 29-14 overall and 17-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Forrest Smith doubled to left-center field and drove in Connor Lynch and Ryan Wright to put OCU on the board in the top of the first inning.
Hunter Marcum singled through the right side of the infield and drove in Chris Valdes in the top of the second. Marcum later scored on a passed ball to stretch the OCU lead to 4-0. Lynch capped the inning with an RBI single that gave the Stars a 5-0 advantage.
The Pioneers plated two runs in the bottom of the second and another in the bottom of the third to cut the Stars' lead to 5-3.
In the top of the fifth, Valdes tripled and drove in a pair of insurance runs to push OCU's lead to 7-3.
Starting pitcher Chris Pike struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh and handed OCU the 7-3 victory. The senior righty gave up three runs on six hits and struck out eight en route to picking up his eighth win of the season. Pike's eight strikeouts improved his season total to 101.
Valdes went 4-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Stars at the plate. Smith followed with a pair of RBIs.
Wayland Baptist held the OCU offense to just three hits and took game No. 2 2-0.
Starting pitcher Brad Wieck allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out nine but was saddled with the loss.
Smith went 2-for-3 to lead OCU at the plate.
The Stars will return to action against Wayland Baptist at 1 p.m. Friday at Wilder Field in Plainview, Texas.
