Pike tosses perfect game, Stars sweep St. Gregory’s

OCU takes two from Cavaliers

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University's Chris Pike tossed a perfect game and helped the Stars sweep St. Gregory's 5-0 and 5-3 in a doubleheader Friday at Jim Wade Stadium.
Pike, a senior from Southampton, N.Y., struck out 18 and threw a perfect game to propel the Stars, ranked No. 5 in NAIA baseball, to victory in the first game. OCU clubbed a pair of home runs and withstood a late rally by the Cavaliers in the nightcap to earn the sweep and improve to 13-3 overall and 5-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Pike became the first OCU pitcher to throw a perfect game since Mike Mlotkowski accomplished the feat against Hastings (Neb.) in 2005. Pike's perfect game is the 20th in NAIA history and second this season. Josh Turner of Northwestern (Iowa) recorded a perfect game on Feb. 24.
Forrest Smith crushed a two-run homer over the center-field fence in the bottom of the first inning to stake OCU to a 2-0 lead.
And RBI single from Adonis Askew in the bottom of the fourth and another from Mason Toole in the bottom of the fifth expanded the Stars' lead to 4-0.
Josh Dickey capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to left that made the score 5-0 in favor of OCU.
Pike struck out 14 batters in a row from the second batter of the game through the top of the fifth inning. The right hander struck out the side five times including the top of the seventh and handed OCU the 5-0 win.
Smith clubbed a second two-run bomb and put OCU on top 2-0 in the bottom of the first of game No. 2.
In the bottom of the second, Dickey smacked his second solo shot of the day and gave OCU a 3-0 lead.
Smith drove in his fifth run of the day and made the score 4-0 when he singled to right and plated Josh Halbert in the bottom of the third.
The Cavaliers roared back in the top of the fifth and scored three runs to cut the Stars' advantage to 4-3.
Hunter Marcum doubled and drove in Garrett Foster in the bottom of the fifth to give OCU an insurance run and make the score 5-3.
Brad Wieck struck out two and retired the sided in the top of the seventh to give OCU the 5-3 victory.
Starting pitcher Shane Henderson tossed six innings and allowed three runs on three hits with seven strikeouts to pick up the win. Wieck struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief and earned a save.
The Stars will return to action in the third and final game of the series with St. Gregory's at 1 p.m. Sunday at Bill Nicklas Field in Shawnee, Okla.
