Stars top Oklahoma Baptist 5-3

Stars move to 9-1 in SAC play

Forrest Smith slugged a pair of two-run home runs against Oklahoma Baptist.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University powered its way to a 5-3 victory over Oklahoma Baptist Thursday at Jim Wade Stadium.
Forrest Smith clubbed a pair of two-run home runs and Chris Pike struck out eight to help lift the Stars, ranked No. 5 in NAIA baseball, over the 11th-ranked Bison. OCU improved to 20-6 overall and 9-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play with the win.
The Bison struck for four hits and one run in the first two innings of the ballgame and ended Pike's 17-inning hitless streak that dated back to Feb. 28.
OCU evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third when Connor Lynch singled to left field and plated in Kyle Lacy from second base. Smith followed with a two-run blast over the right-center field fence and gave the Stars a 3-1 advantage.
Smith struck again in the bottom of the fifth with his second two-run bomb and stretched the OCU lead to 5-1.
OBU's Steven Knudson answered with a solo homer in the top of the sixth that cut the Stars' lead to 5-2.
The Bison put another run on the board in the top of the eighth when Frankie Wright scored on a fielder's choice.
Brad Wieck slammed the door on OBU in the top of the eighth and struck out the side in the top of the ninth to hand OCU the 5-3 win.
Pike, the back-to-back Collegiate Baseball player of the week, allowed two earned runs and struck out eight in 7.2 innings of work to pick up the win and improved to 5-1 on the season.
Weick struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings of relief and earned his fifth save of the season.
Smith went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and slugged his NAIA-leading 12th and 13th home runs of the season to lead the Stars at the plate. Lynch went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The win was OCU coach Denney Crabaugh's 1,252nd win of his career. The Stars' 18-0 win over Southwestern Christian on March 14 marked the OCU skipper's 1,250th career victory.
OCU will return to action against Oklahoma Baptist at 2 p.m. Friday at Bison Field at Ford Park in Shawnee, Okla.
