OCU completes sweep of USAO 7-6, 4-0

Stars register first shutout of 2014

Forrest Smith became the first OCU player to clout three home runs in a game since Miguel Beltran on March 26, 2011.

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Forrest Smith powered Oklahoma City University to a doubleheader sweep of USAO 7-6, 4-0 on Friday at Bill Smith Ballpark.
Smith, a senior from Bakersfield, Calif., hammered three home runs, including the game-winning homer in the seventh to rally OCU from a 5-1 deficit in the first game. The Stars, ranked fifth in NAIA baseball, improved to 9-2, 3-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
OCU took all three from USAO (8-7, 0-3 SAC) in the first series of conference play for both teams. Smith became the first Star to nail three homers in a game since Miguel Beltran did it at St. Gregory's on March 26, 2011 in Shawnee, Okla.
Smith hit his first homer, a two-run blast over the center-field fence, in the third to cut OCU's deficit to 5-3. Smith's second homer, a solo shot to right in the fifth, made the score 6-4 with USAO still ahead.
OCU scored twice in the sixth to tie the game. Connor Lynch hit a fly ball to left field to bring home Josh Halbert for the tying run.
Smith led off the seventh with a drive that cleared the center-field wall. Chris Pike struck out two in the bottom of the inning to help Smith's home run hold up.
Pike improved to 2-1 on the year. Pike, a senior right-hander from Southampton, N.Y., fanned 12 in a seven-inning, complete-game effort.
In the second game, Kyle Lacy pounded a two-run homer in the second inning to get the Stars' offense going.
OCU tacked on runs in the fifth and the sixth. The Stars scored on an error in the fifth. In the sixth, Hunter Marcum doubled along the left-field foul line to drive in a run.
Michael Nolan shut out USAO on four hits. Nolan, a junior lefty from Yonkers, N.Y., rung up 11 strikeouts. Nolan (2-0) fanned five in a row from the second to the third.
OCU has revamped its weekend schedule. The Stars face Robert Morris (Ill.) at 10 a.m., then Tabor at 3 p.m. Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium. Robert Morris and Tabor meet at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium. OCU is scheduled to take on Robert Morris in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Sunday.
