OKLAHOMA CITY – Brian Fisher scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to bring Oklahoma City University a 6-5 victory over Iowa Wesleyan on Tuesday at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars, ranked seventh in NAIA baseball, notched their 16th consecutive victory to move to 16-2. Iowa Wesleyan's Todd Christensen uncorked two wild pitches in the ninth to aid OCU.
Chad Carman led off the bottom of the ninth for OCU with an infield hit. Fisher ran for Carman, then got to second base on Matt Presley's base hit. Fisher got to third on Christensen's first wild pitch, then ended the game on the other.
Steve Styck recorded the win for the Stars. Styck, a senior right-hander from Kankakee, Ill., kept Iowa Wesleyan off the scoreboard in the ninth. Styck put the potential winning run aboard with a leadoff walk. Christensen doubled to put runners on second and third.
Styck (2-0) got Adam DuBuque to ground out to first, then struck out Neil Yemm to snuff out the Iowa Wesleyan threat.
Iowa Wesleyan's Andrew Jurgesmeyer knotted the score 5-5 by leading off the seventh with a home run, knocking a drive just fair from the right-field foul pole.
Julien Pollard put OCU ahead 5-4 with a fourth-inning double to right-center field to bring home Kirk Walker.
Iowa Wesleyan plated four runs in the top of the third to go up 4-3. Dearth Parker answered for the Stars with a sacrifice fly to center to score pinch runner Terrance Jackson. Jackson ran for Carman after Carman doubled.
In the second, OCU took the lead as Parker and Walker had RBI singles. Pollard added a sacrifice fly.
Walker, a senior from Bakersfield, Calif., went 3-for-4 with a run scored and run driven in, while Mark Purser, a senior from Spokane, Wash., was 3-for-5 with a run scored for OCU. Parker, a senior from Roff, Okla., was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, and Pollard, a senior from Tacoma, Wash., went 2-for-4 with two runs driven in.
Carman, a junior from Midwest City, Okla., went 2-for-5, and Presley, a senior from Colorado Springs, Colo., was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
OCU resumes Sooner Athletic Conference play by facing Northwestern Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. Thursday at Jim Wade Stadium.
