OCU nips Northwestern 2-1, 4-1

Stars stay unbeaten in SAC baseball, extend overall win streak to 19

Julien Pollard drove in both runs in OCU's first-game victory Saturday.

ALVA, Okla. – Oklahoma City University stayed unbeaten in Sooner Athletic Conference baseball play after taking two from Northwestern Oklahoma State 2-1 and 4-1 in eight innings on Saturday at Myers Stadium.

The Stars, ranked seventh in the NAIA, improved to 19-2, 10-0 in the SAC. OCU ran its overall win streak to 19 propelled by Allen Townsend's and Rich Hawkins' pitching performances.

Townsend, a junior left-hander from San Diego, notched eight strikeouts in a complete-game, seven-inning outing. Townsend (3-0) allowed one unearned run on six hits and two walks.

Julien Pollard put OCU on the scoreboard with a base hit to right field to score Ruben Sosa in the first inning. Northwestern took advantage of an error to tie the game in the fifth.

Pollard came through again for the Stars in the seventh. Terrance Jackson led off the inning with a walk, then Sosa drew a walk as well. Pollard nailed a single to right to bring home Jackson.

Townsend allowed a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh. Townsend got Patrick Johnson Jr. to pop up to the infield, then struck out Wes Brorsen. With the tying run on second base, Michael Ciombor lined out to shortstop Kirk Walker to end the game.

Northwestern left two runners on in the sixth. George Flores and Kyle Weber each singled, but Townsend retired Juan Natal on a called strike three.

Pollard, a senior from Tacoma, Wash., went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Walker, a senior from Bakersfield, Calif., was 3-for-4. Matt Presley, a senior from Colorado Springs, Colo., went 1-for-3, while Sosa, a junior from Lawrence, Mass., drew two walks and scored a run.

In the second game, Hawkins (3-2) scattered 10 Northwestern hits while fanning one in eight innings. Hawkins, a junior lefty from Edmond, Okla., benefited from 13 groundouts, including three Stars double plays.

In the third, OCU scored first on Walker's fielder's choice grounder. Northwestern's Vincent Valdez gunned Brian Fisher down at home plate, but Wade Schwerdtfeger committed a throwing error to allow Jackson to reach home safely.

Valdez launched a solo home run to left to knot the game at one run each in the sixth.

With two out in the eighth, Presley put OCU ahead 2-1 on a base hit to right to score Mark Purser, who got on with a walk. Presley and Walker took advantage of an error to tack on more runs.

Walker went 2-for-4 and scored a run, and Jackson, a senior from Greenville, Ala., was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Presley went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Stars meet Southwestern Oklahoma State at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Weatherford, Okla.
