OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University rallied for an 88-79 victory over York (Neb.) on Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Brandon Moton, a junior from Beaumont, Texas, ignited OCU with 21 points, nine rebounds, six assists and two steals. The Stars, ranked 21st in NAIA Division I men's basketball, erased a seven-point deficit to improve to 10-2 on the season.
OCU had five double-digit scorers in the game. Dee Proby, a senior from Round Rock, Texas, added 15 points, six rebounds and three assists for the Stars, while Nate Flowers, a senior from Waldorf, Md., chipped in 14 points and four rebounds.
Johnny Stephene recorded 13 points, four assists and two steals, and Shane Rogers totaled 10 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Stars.
OCU seized the lead on a 16-0 Stars romp early in the second half. Proby dropped in a putback and a free throw to spark OCU's onslaught. Stephene put the Stars ahead 41-40 with a transition bucket at 18:12 left in the game.
Moton knocked in a 3-pointer, while Rogers had two lay-ins during the OCU run. Moton capped the run with a fastbreak bucket to give OCU a 52-40 advantage with 15:17 showing.
The Stars turned to a small lineup to ignite their run. York went scoreless for 4:19 during that stretch.
“We were better able to get stops,” OCU coach Kevin Morrissey said. “We had difficulty matching up with them because they don't have a true big man.”
OCU sank 55.6 percent of its shots from the floor. The Stars overcame 29 turnovers, which York turned into 27 points. OCU had 17 turnovers by halftime as it trailed 38-36.
“Our timing was off,” Morrissey said. “I knew we would have turnovers, but not nearly 30. Our passes were off. They were soft.
“You can't pick and choose the times to go hard. We have to get better to have a chance to compete in the postseason.”
The Stars meet Rogers State at 8 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
