THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University squares off with 10th-ranked Texas Wesleyan in a road test.
ABOUT THE STARS: OCU hung a 65-55 defeat on William Jewell (Mo.) on Nov. 14 at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (2-0) limited William Jewell to 36.1 percent shooting from the floor.
Chris Brown, a 6-foot senior from Spencer, Okla., scored a game-high 23 points to go with six rebounds and two assists. Brown hit 9 of 15 shots from the field. Brown tops OCU with 21.5 points a game.
Jerome Phillips, a 6-5 senior from Chickasha, Okla., added 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Phillips is averaging 15.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.00 steals a game. Al Graham, a 6-3 junior from Jackson, Miss., tops NAIA Division I with an 11-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, and Bryant Williams, a 6-9 senior from Austin, Texas, leads the NAIA in blocked shots at 5.00 a contest.
In the preseason, the Stars have been picked to finish sixth in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU has captured the SAC regular-season crown 13 times. OCU received votes in the preseason NAIA Division I rankings.
Texas Welseyan holds a 9-6 advantage over OCU in the all-time series, including a 67-65 win over the Stars in the 2006 NAIA Division I championship game. The Stars avenged that loss in the last meeting 75-74 on Dec. 3, 2006 at Abe Lemons Arena on Nick Covington's 3-pointer with 50 seconds remaining.
ABOUT THE RAMS: Texas Wesleyan routed Arlington Baptist 95-22 on Friday in Fort Worth, Texas. Texas Wesleyan (3-3) equaled a school record with its 23rd consecutive home-court win.
Brian Wanamaker, a 6-2 junior, led six double-digit scorers with 16 points. Wanamaker added seven rebounds, 12 assists and three steals. Jeremy Mayfield, a 6-10 junior, contributed 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench, knocking in all six of his shots from the field.
Texas Wesleyan was rated 10th in the preseason NAIA Division I rankings. Texas Wesleyan is favored to win the Red River Athletic Conference.
ABOUT THE COACHES: Kevin Morrissey enters his first full season as OCU head coach. Morrissey spent the previous four seasons as St. Gregory's coach. He also has been an assistant at Missouri State and Texas-Pan American. Morrissey played his college ball at Oklahoma Baptist and Oral Roberts and high school at Bishop McGuinness in Oklahoma City.
Terry Waldrop has the most wins of any Texas Wesleyan men's basketball coach, sporting a 194-120 record in his 11th season guiding the Rams. He was the National Association of Basketball Coaches NAIA coach of the year after leading Texas Wesleyan to the 2006 national title.
