OKLAHOMA CITY – The Stars shone bright last week and will look to continue their winning ways this weekend with a crucial series against the Sooner Athletic Conference first place team. Texas Wesleyan University will visit Denney Crabaugh Field while boasting a Top-25 NAIA rating.
Friday, the Stars and Rams will commence their three-game series at Jim Wade Stadium. Currently, there is a log jam atop the SAC standings with Texas Wesleyan and Mid-America Christian University who are tied at 12-3. Then in second place with a 9-6 conference record, there is a three-way tie between OCU, Wayland Baptist, and Central Christian College. With a solid performance this weekend, Oklahoma City could move into sole possession of second place or tie TWU for first.
OCU Notebook
Previously: Oklahoma City swept Southwestern Christian University in their three-game road series. The Stars outscored the Eagles, 23-19 and won two of the three games by one run. Game two of the series went to extra innings.
Hitting: As a unit, OCU is now hitting .281 on the season.
Trent Baker leads the Stars with his .385 batting average with
Aiden Van Rensum closely at his heels. Van Rensum is the reigning SAC Player of the Week; Van Rensum aided the Stars to a 4-0 record last week by going 8-of-19 at the plate for a batting average of .421. Van Rensum had four extra base hits, two those being home runs, while driving in 12 runs and scoring six times himself. Van Rensum completed the week with a .842 slugging percentage.
Pitching: OCU owns a team earned run average of 7.37 with 1.80 walks and hits per inning pitched (WHIP). Both the ERA and WHIP for OCU's picthing staff are lower this week than they were last week.
Spencer Biggerstaff and
Nick Anaya both collected wins out of the bullpen for the Stars last week. Biggerstaff's winning decision was his first of 2026. Last week, Anaya pitched 2.2 innings without allowing a single run to opponents.
On the Basepaths: Oklahoma City is 62 of 73 in stolen bases this season, led by Baker. The Stars' outfielder has stolen 22 bases on his 23 attempts.
Cooper Holtorf and
Aiden Alexander have also successfully swiped 10 or more bags each, rounding out the Stars' triple-threat on the basepath.
About Texas Wesleyan University: The Rams enter this weekend's series as the #21 team in all of NAIA baseball and holds an overall record of 26-5 with a 12-4 record in SAC play. Texas Wesleyan is coming off a three-game sweep of Nelson University where they scored at least nine runs in every game of the series. TWU is also ranked #21 in the country and have the only player in the conference to win Player of the Week honors three times this season. Brenden Vela is the steam of the offensive engine for TWU; Vela holds an impressive .481 batting average to go along with his .925 slugging percentage. Vela leads the Rams in runs scored, total bases, runs batted in, hits, and home runs.
