Cheer takes title in Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Oklahoma City cheer team claimed its first title since 2021 at the NCA Nationals in Daytona Beach.

OCU ran through the competition placing first out of 11 schools with a score of 90.99 edging out the runner-up in UT Southern who posted a score of 87.80.

Oklahoma City got off to strong start in the prelims with a raw score of 89.86 while holding down first place with an event score of 22.21.

"I'm so excited to bring a banner back home" head cheer coach Alicia Bailey said. "We haven't taken a team to NCA College Nationals since 2016. This event provides the biggest stage these athletes will ever perform on and it is truly one of a kind. It's something every cheerleader dreams of and I'm thrilled we were able to provide these student-athletes this opportunity.  We had a few mistakes in prelims, but the team rallied together ready to go into finals strong. They delivered their best performance of the year in finals and that feeling is just incredible. It's amazing to see all the hard work, early morning practices, aches, pains, and injuries finally pay off."

Bailey goes on to say just how connected her team is by mentioning, "This team has a special bond with each other and I think it shows when they are on the mat. They have been through lots of ups and downs- including heartbreak and breaking records. But they have done it all as a team and stuck together through everything. That's something I am very proud of."

The Stars picked up its ninth title as a program with previous national championships coming in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2021.
