Game Preview: Baseball vs Sterling College

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City baseball team will look to snap a six-game losing streak on Tuesday as the Stars host Sterling College for one nine-inning game on Denney Crabaugh Field at Jim Wade Stadium.

About the Stars 

  • After opening the year on an 8-0 run the Stars have dropped their last six games in a row. During the win streak, Oklahoma City combined for 67 runs while only scoring eight runs during the six-game drought.  
  • OCU comes off a two-game series against Doane University where it lost game one after only being able to total four hits in the game, its second-lowest total of the year while leaving the bases loaded twice and suffering its first shutout of the season.  
  • In game two, the Stars allowed a season-high run from the Tigers as Oklahoma City committed four errors in the 13-4 defeat. 
  • Hunter Lenochan tabbed multiple hits in game two on Sunday which included his first home run of the season. 
  • Darian Duhon remains the only Star hitting above .400 as the junior also holds the team lead in hits with 19. 
  • Trent Kiraly leads the Stars with five home runs as the OCU clean-up hitter holds the team lead with 12 RBIs. Kiraly's power came up clutch back on Feb. 9 as the senior launched a walk-off home run to beat Concordia 6-5.  
  • Oklahoma City has stuck with its main rotation of Andrew Limbaugh, Jacob Burkett, and Connor Ferguson to open the season. Limbaugh leads the team in innings pitched with 19.2. The left-hander comes in with a 1-1 record in four starts and despite taking the loss, Limbaugh struck out a season-high seven batters against MidAmerica Nazarene.

About the Warriors 

  • Sterling College is off to a fast start to its 2024 season currently riding a five-game winning streak coming off a three-game sweep over York University.  
  • The 7-1 Warriors saw their only loss come against Wiley College in a 9-6 defeat back on Feb. 9. 
  • Luis Morales and David Lira head the Warriors offense with averages nearing the 400 mark. Morales leads the team with 15 hits and a .395 average. 
  • For Gates, the junior hits at a .385 clip and comes in on a three-game hitting streak after going 1-for-5 with an RBI on Sunday.   
  • Pitching for Sterling has been more than productive with its main three starters all holding an ERA under 3.00. 
  • David Lira has thrown the most innings for Sterling and holds the fifth most strikeouts in all of the NAIA with 30. 
  • Rivera and Canaan both come in with ERAs below 2.00 as Rivera has struck out 19 batters in 12.1 innings while Cannon holds a 2-0 record with his most recent outing coming on Sunday in the win against York. 

Series History  

  • Oklahoma City comes trailing in the all-time series as the Warriors hold an 8-7 advantage after beating the Stars in the last two meetings.  
  • The two teams met twice last year, the first back on almost a year to date on Feb. 21 as Sterling held on for a 10-8 win before winning the second meeting 12-10 on Apr. 4.  

What's Next 

  • Oklahoma City hits the road for the first time in 2024 with three games over the weekend against Missouri Baptist and Columbia College on Saturday before taking on Central Methodist on Sunday all happening in Fayette, Mo.
