OCU owns No. 3 seed in NAIA Championship Opening Round

Stars compete for 17th NAIA World Series bid

BELLEVUE, Neb. – Oklahoma City University snagged the third seed in the NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round Bellevue Bracket starting Monday at Don Roddy Field.

The Stars (30-19) meet 18th-ranked Doane (Neb.) at noon Monday at Roddy Field. Fifth-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) takes on Grand View (Iowa) at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the other game that day in the tournament.

Oklahoma City clinched its spot in the NAIA Championship Opening Round with a 13-3 win over Science & Arts on Monday in Chickasha, Okla., for the program's 14th Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament championship. The Stars rank 23rd in the NAIA this season with five shutouts.

"We came through this weekend when it mattered the most," OCU coach Keith Lytle said after the SAC Tournament. "Hopefully we take some of this momentum, fight back through the tournament coming up and get back to Lewiston."

Eli Davis, a senior left-handed criminal justice major from Shawnee, Okla., became two-time conference pitcher of the year. Davis turned in a complete-game outing, striking out six in seven innings Monday in the league tournament title game. Davis went 2-0 and fanned 14 in 13 innings with a 1.39 earned run average in the SAC Tournament. On the season, he owns an 11-2 mark with a 1.91 ERA and 124 strikeouts in 94 innings pitched. He ranks second in strikeouts and third in wins and innings pitched this year among the NAIA.

OCU has made 16 trips to the NAIA World Series and took the national championship in 2005. The Stars are tied for the most Opening Round titles with six.

The NAIA Championship Opening Round features a 46-team field with the 10 winning teams from the tournaments around the nation reaching the NAIA World Series on May 26-June 2 in Lewiston, Idaho.
