BELLEVUE, Neb. – Oklahoma City University fell short twice in the Bellevue Labor Day Classic on Friday at the Lied Activity Center.
OCU dropped its first match in the tournament against Cornerstone (Mich.) 26-28, 25-19, 25-16, 25-22, then suffered a 25-20, 25-17, 21-25, 25-14 setback to MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.). The Stars went to 4-3.
Against Cornerstone, Ruby Kelley served up aces to put Oklahoma City ahead 17-12 and 26-25. Michela De Stefano knocked down a kill to put OCU up 27-26, then Emma Nickerson and Rylee Steward came up with the block to clinch the set.
Kelley supplied the Stars with 13 kills, 10 digs and three aces. De Stefano chipped in 12 kills, 10 digs, while Emma Vance notched 20 assists and eight digs.
Cassidy DeShong turned in 17 assists and seven digs, and Kaitlyn Dunlap tracked down 14 digs for Oklahoma City.
Against MidAmerica Nazarene, OCU went ahead 21-18 in set 3. Nickerson pounded the go-ahead kill.
De Stefano, a sophomore from Rome, tallied nine kills, seven digs and three blocks. DeShong, a sophomore from Amarillo, Texas, dished out 17 assists with four digs.
Vance, a junior from Norman, Okla., accumulated 13 assists, six digs, four kills and three aces, while Dunlap, a sophomore from Wichita Falls, Texas, had 12 digs.
The Stars face Doane (Neb.) at 9 a.m., then William Woods (Mo.) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Bellevue, Neb.
