OCU crushes Sterling 15-1

McSpadden eyes shot at 1,800 career victories Saturday

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Oklahoma City University stomped York (Neb.) 9-0 and Sterling (Kan.) 15-1 on Friday at the Chickasha Sports Complex in the Mid-America Christian-Science & Arts NAIA Invitational. 

The Stars, ranked fourth in NAIA softball, remained unbeaten on the season with a 9-0 mark. OCU boosted head coach Phil McSpadden's career record to 1,798-393 in his 35th year. 

Oklahoma City continues play Saturday vs. No. 6 Columbia (Mo.) at 10 a.m., then against McPherson (Kan.) at 2:30 p.m. McSpadden owns the most victories vs. four-year competition of any college softball coach ever. McSpadden has guided OCU to 10 national championships in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2007, 2016 and 2017.

Against Sterling, Tiffany Paul drove in four runs, while Mallory McCoy had three RBIs. Shelbey Cornelson struck out seven in five innings to collect the victory. 

Paul crushed a double into center field with the bases loaded to put OCU ahead 11-0 in the fourth inning. Kaitlyn Jones also had a run-scoring double in the fourth. 

McCoy smacked an RBI triple to left-center to give the Stars a 3-0 advantage in the third. 

In the fifth, Paul got hit by pitch with the bases full to push the OCU cushion to 15-0.
