OCU moves into No. 1 spot in NAIA rankings

Stars take over top spot in ratings for first time since May 8, 2015

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Oklahoma City University reached No. 1 in the NAIA baseball rankings released Tuesday.
The Stars took over the No. 1 slot in the ratings for the 33rd time since 2000 to rank second in the NAIA to Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) in that span. OCU took 16 of the 17 available No. 1 votes.
Oklahoma City last sat atop the rankings in the May 8, 2015 poll. OCU garnered votes in the preseason, then moved up to fourth in the first regular-season rankings of the season March 7. OCU rose to the second spot in the previous two polls. OCU currently also holds the top spot in the NAIA men's golf and softball rankings.
The Stars lead the NAIA with 40 wins, standing at 40-5 entering Tuesday's game at Friends (Kan.) in Wichita, Kan. OCU tops the NAIA in slugging percentage (.620), doubles (142) and doubles per game (3.16) while ranking second in runs scored (416), runs batted in (381) and RBIs per game (8.47). OCU has won 21 of its last 22 games, sweeping a three-game series from Wayland Baptist (Texas) on April 13-14 in Plainview, Texas. The Stars fell 12-3 to Texas Wesleyan, then ranked 12th, on April 8 in Oklahoma City. OCU has an 11-3 record against ranked teams this season.
Three Sooner Athletic Conference teams hold spots in the latest 25. Texas Wesleyan sits at No. 13, while USAO stands at No. 18.
OCU entered 2017 with the most wins in college baseball since 1992 with 1,245.
