CEDAR HILL, Texas – Brad Wieck's complete-game, three-hit shutout fueled Oklahoma City University's 3-0 victory over Northwood (Texas) on Saturday at Knights Field.
Forrest Smith drove in two runs as Ryan Wright scored each time to support Wieck's effort. The Stars, ranked 10th in NAIA baseball, moved to 25-11, 13-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Wieck, a junior left-hander from Canyon, Texas, struck out 15 in nine innings and 122 pitches of work. Wieck retired the last 14 Northwood batters of the game in a row. He struck out the side in the first inning in improving to 2-3 on the year.
Joee Reyna's single with one out in the first, Casey Mullinex's base hit with two out in the third and Jason Gareri's single with one out in the fifth accounted for Northwood's base runners on the day. Mullinex and Gareri each stole second base.
Smith nailed an RBI double to right-center field with two out in the first. Wright scored on the double after singling to center with one out.
In the sixth, OCU increased its lead to 2-0 as Smith bounced a base hit past the second baseman to score Wright. Wright led off the top of the sixth by lacing a double along the right-field foul line.
Mason Toole reached home plate in the seventh on pitcher Tatum Hendrix's throwing error. Toole got on base via a throwing error by the catcher Carlos Contreras on a dropped third strike.
Smith, a senior from Bakersfield, Calif., went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Wright, a junior from Fruitland, Idaho, was 2-for-5 with two runs scored for the Stars. Kyle Lacy, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases.
Toole doubled, and Jared Baker singled for OCU.
The Stars travel to Oklahoma Christian for a 7 p.m. contest Tuesday at Dobson Field.
