OCU tops Bacone 6-4

Stars use seven pitchers, improve to 24-9

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University picked up a 6-4 victory over Bacone Tuesday at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars, ranked No. 10 in NAIA baseball, threw seven pitchers on the night to piece together the 6-4 victory and improve to 24-9 on the season.
The Stars fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning when the Warriors got a two-RBI single from Jean Ortiz.
OCU answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the first. Forrest Smith drove in the first run with a double to right center field. Jared Baker and Austin Murphy each drove in a run later in the inning to give OCU the lead.
Bacone got an RBI single from Peter Rodriguez and tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the third inning, OCU regained the lead when Smith scored on a delayed double steal.
Garrett Foster came through with a pinch-hit double in the bottom of the seventh that plated Kyle Lacy and made the score 5-3 in favor of the Stars.
OCU added an insurance run in the eighth inning when Spenser Gill scored on a Bacone error.
Bacone pushed a run across in the top of the ninth, but Josh Halbert retired the side and handed OCU the 6-4 victory.
Starting pitcher Cale Russell tossed four innings and struck out three. Ricky Spain, Chris Valdes, Lacy, Holden Lyons, Roby Romero and Halbert all made relief appearances. Spian earned the win and Halbert picked up his third save of the season.
Baker, Foster, Murphy and Smith all drove in a run to lead the Stars at the plate.
OCU will return to action against Northwood (Texas) Friday 1 p.m. in Cedar Hill, Texas.
