Stars split twin bill with Midland

OCU falls 11-1, wins 9-4

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University split a doubleheader with Midland (Neb.) Monday at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars, ranked No. 5 in NAIA baseball, fell 11-1 to the Warriors in the first game but responded with a 9-4 victory in the nightcap. The split moves OCU to 18-6 on the season.
Midland slugged three home runs and scored nine runs in the first five innings to take a commanding 9-0 lead.
Ryan Wright singled to center field and drove in Josh Halbert from third base to cut the Midland lead to 9-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
The Warriors tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh before slamming the door on the Stars in the bottom of the inning and taking the 11-1 victory.
Starting pitcher Cale Russell gave up seven runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings and was saddled with the loss. Russell struck out four batters on the day. Ricky Spain allowed four runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings of relief.
Wright went 2-for-3 and drove in a run to lead OCU at the dish. Kyle Lacy went 2-for-4.
Midland jumped on top in the first inning when Dylan Steyer doubled down the left-field and plated a pair of runs.
Forrest Smith smacked a two-run homer to center in the bottom of the first to even the score at 2-2.
Connor Lynch clubbed a three-run bomb in the bottom of the third to stretch the OCU lead to 5-2. Jared Baker doubled to right center and plated Laszlo Horvath from third later in the inning to make the score 6-2.
Midland's Jake Loftus homered in the in the top of the fourth and cut the Stars' advantage to 6-4.
Lynch drove in Hunter Marcum on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth. Halbert blasted a two-run homer to right in the bottom of the sixth and expanded the OCU lead to 9-4.
Brad Wieck retired the side in the top of the seventh and handed OCU the 9-4 victory.
Starting pitcher Matt Marsh allowed two runs on three hits in one inning of work. Roby Romero tossed 2.1 innings in relief and struck out two to pick up the win. Lacy stuck out three in one inning of work and Wieck struck out four in 2.2 innings of relief.
Lynch went 2-for-2 and drove in four runs to lead the Stars at the plate. Halbert and Smith both went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
OCU will return to action against Southern Nazarene at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Cypert Athletic Complex.
