Stars club Roosevelt 19-7

OCU slugged five home runs, improved to 15-3

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pounded Roosevelt (Ill.) 19-7 Monday at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars, ranked No. 5 in NAIA baseball, slugged five home runs and outhit the Lakers 20-4 on the day to improve to 15-3 on the season.
OCU took a 4-0 lead with no outs in the first inning after Forrest Smith clubbed a grand slam over the center-field fence. Back-to-back sacrifice flies from Garrett Foster and Adonis Askew later in the inning gave the Stars a 6-0 advantage.
Jared Baker drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle and later scored on a Lakers' throwing error to give OCU a 9-0 edge in the second inning.
Ryan Wright scored on a Roosevelt error in the bottom of the third. Baker followed with an RBI single to right that stretched the Stars' lead to 11-0.
Foster led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to left. Chris Valdes doubled and drove in a run later in the inning to make the score 13-1 in favor of OCU.
Austin Murphy slugged a solo homer with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Four batters later, Kyle Lacy doubled to center and drove in a run. Wright capped the inning with an RBI single to make the score 16-3.
Valdes led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run after OCU surrendered four runs in the top of the inning. Randy Vann followed with a solo blast of his own two batters later. Adam Clark singled through the left side of the infield to cap the inning and give OCU a 19-7 advantage.
Valdes loaded the bases in the top of the seventh but was able to retire the side and give OCU the 19-7 victory.
Starting pitcher Cale Russell struck out seven in 5.2 innings of work and picked up the win to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Valdes struck out three in 1.1 inning of relief.
Smith went 2-for-4 with four RBIs to lead OCU at the dish. Baker followed with three RBIs while Foster and Valdes drove in two runs apiece. 10 OCU players drove in at least one run on the day.
The Stars will return to action against Bacone at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Muskogee, Okla.
