OKLAHOMA CITY – Josh Dickey's two-run double brought Oklahoma City University a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over Oklahoma Wesleyan on Tuesday at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Forrest Smith knocked in a run by bouncing a base hit through the left part of the infield, erasing a 3-2 deficit. OCU, ranked fifth in NAIA baseball, moved to 6-2.
Dickey, a senior from Bakersfield, Calif., nailed a two-out double to right-center field in the seventh. Dickey ended the inning by getting thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple.
Oklahoma Wesleyan stranded three runners in the final two innings thanks to Stars relievers Cale Russell, Roby Romero and Brad Wieck.
Romero got Jose Ruiz to ground out with two runners on to end the eighth. Oklahoma Wesleyan's Cody Riley reached via a walk to lead off the ninth. Wieck struck out two batters and retired another on a grounder to close out the game.
Matt Marsh started for the Stars and fanned three in four innings. Russell, a junior left-hander from Norman, Okla., picked up the victory. Russell (2-0) pitched 3.2 innings and had a strikeout.
Romero, a junior righty from Santa Fe, N.M., finished with one out, while Wieck, a junior left-hander from Canyon, Texas, worked the final inning. Wieck notched his second save of the year.
Josh Halbert started the bottom of the third by smacking a double to right. Halbert, a junior from Choctaw, Okla., reached third base on a wild pitch. Halbert scored when Jared Baker grounded into a fielding error by Oklahoma Wesleyan third baseman Trae Bobo. The score was tied 1-1.
In the fifth, Smith singled to fill the bases. Austin Murphy grounded out to first to score Halbert and knot the score 2-2.
Halbert went 2-for-4 and scored three times, while Smith, a senior from Bakersfield, Calif., was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for the Stars. Baker, Dickey, Halbert and Kyle Lacy all had doubles for OCU.
OCU is set to face USAO at 2 p.m. Thursday at Jim Wade Stadium in the Sooner Athletic Conference opener for both clubs.
