Lubbock Christian edges OCU 6-5 in 10 innings

Stars look forward to NAIA Championship Opening Round

OKLAHOMA CITY – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University dropped a 6-5, 10-inning contest to fifth-ranked Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium in the Sooner Athletic Conference baseball tournament championship.
Chris Wallis drove in the tying run as OCU pushed across three runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. The Stars, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, fell to 47-11. OCU hosts the NAIA Championship Opening Round Oklahoma City Bracket on May 9-13 with an NAIA World Series berth on the line. Opening-round pairings will be revealed noon Monday.
Christian Vazquez knocked in the winning run with one out the top of the 10th on a base hit to center field. Vazquez followed singles by Brent Leslie and Tanner Rainey.
Wallis nailed a base hit to left field that Lubbock Christian left fielder Brett Kauten nearly snared on a diving attempt with two out in the ninth, scoring Chase Jensen. Jensen stole second, then took third on a passed ball. Cody Ferrell scored on the passed ball to close OCU's gap to 5-4.
The Stars cut the Lubbock Christian lead to 5-3 when Jonathan Rodriguez reached home plate on Jensen's fielder's choice groundball.
In the top of the ninth, Lubbock Christian extended its lead to 5-2 using RBI singles by Brandon Wilson and Joel Lutz.
In the fourth, Lubbock Christian tied the game 2-2 using Wilson's home run to right. Lutz scored the go-ahead run as Jason Fisch grounded out with the bases loaded.
Forrest Smith ripped a two-run homer over the right-field wall in the second to put OCU in front 2-1.
Vazquez led off the game with a solo shot over the wall in right.
Dalton Silva picked up the victory in relief. Patrick Goelz took the loss for OCU. Shane Henderson fanned seven in 5.1 innings, permitting two earned runs on five hits and four walks for the Stars. Kyle Forsyth limited the Stars to three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out six for Lubbock Christian.
Wallis, a junior from Albuquerque, N.M., was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Smith, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., nailed his 11th homer and went 1-for-3. Ferrell, a senior from McLoud, Okla., scored twice.
Lubbock Christian left 11 on base. Ryan Gibson struck out Rainey with the bases loaded in the sixth. Goelz retired Wigberto Nevarez on a popout with the bases full in the ninth.
OCU's Dalton Bernardi reached third as the potential tying run in the sixth. Kale Gaden socked a line drive that Wilson dove to grab to snuff out the Stars' rally.
