Stars split with Wayland Baptist

OCU dropped the first game 11-10 and took the second 21-5

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University spilt a doubleheader with Wayland Baptist (Texas) losing the first game 11-10 before taking the second 21-5 Saturday at Wilder Field.
The Stars, ranked No. 1 in NAIA baseball, clubbed six home runs on the day and moved to 40-9 overall and 18-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Forrest Smith started the scoring in top of the second inning with a solo home run to left-center field.
After the Pioneers evened the score at 1-1, OCU broke the game open with a five-run top of the third. Chase Jensen capped the inning with a three-run homer to left and staked the Stars to a 6-1 advantage.
A pair of RBI singles from Kale Gaden in the fourth and sixth innings stretched the Stars lead to 8-1. Later in the top of the sixth, Cody Ferrell and Smith each drove in a run to make the score 10-1 in favor of the Stars.
Wayland Baptist battled back with 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh, punctuated by a grand slam from Bernie Rosario, and took the 11-10 victory.
Shane Henderson allowed one run on one hit with six strikeouts in six innings. Dalton Bernardi, Patrick Goelz and Davis Henderson combined to allow 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Jensen and Smith led the Stars at the plate with three RBIs apiece.
Smith got OCU on the scoreboard in game No. 2 with a two-RBI single in the top of the first.
The Pioneers responded with a five-run bottom of the first. Brian Allen capped the scoring with a double that plated two runs and gave Wayland Baptist a 5-2 lead.
OCU retook the lead in the top of the second with a seven-run outburst. A solo home run from Gaden and a three-run blast by Jonathan Sigado gave the Stars a 9-5 lead.
In the top of the third, Jonathan Rodriguez doubled and drove in a run. Gaden followed with a two-RBI single that put OCU in front 12-5.
Jensen homered in the top of the fifth and Ferrell went deep in the top of the seventh. Trey Summers capped the scoring with a three-RBI double and the Stars took the 21-5 victory.
Ryan Gibson struck out five in 4.2 innings of work and got the win to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Gaden, Sigado, Smith and Summers each drove in three runs apiece to lead the Stars at the dish.
OCU will return to action against Texas Wesleyan at 4 p.m. Monday at Jim Wade Stadium.
