OCU nips Oklahoma Christian 2-1

Stars roll to 18-2 win over York

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University edged Oklahoma Christian 2-1 after cruising past York (Neb.) 18-2 on Sunday at Pirate Field at Putnam City High School.
Kale Gaden drove in the winning run against Oklahoma Christian, while Chase Jensen and Chris Wallis hit home runs against York. The Stars, ranked fourth in NAIA baseball, improved to 13-3.
Against Oklahoma Christian, Gaden socked an RBI double into the right-center field gap with one out in the sixth inning. Gaden's double followed Walker Davidson's leadoff double. The Stars led 2-0.
In the third, Wallis cranked a run-scoring base hit to center to bring home Jonathan Sigado, who led off the inning with a single.
Oklahoma Christian closed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Cody Rosecrans had an RBI double.
Cody Crabaugh and Davis Henderson combined to limit Oklahoma Christian to one run on five hits. Crabaugh, a senior right-hander from Edmond, Okla., struck out six and allowed one run on five hits. Crabaugh retired 11 batters in a row between the second and the fifth innings. He fanned three Oklahoma Christian hitters during the fourth and the fifth. Crabaugh stranded two runners on second and third in the second and the sixth.
Henderson, a senior righty from Spring, Texas, worked a 1-2-3 seventh to finish off Oklahoma Christian. Henderson notched his first save as a Star.
Gaden, a senior from Stillwater, Okla., went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Wallis, a junior from Albuquerque, N.M., was 1-for-2 with a run driven in.
Against York, the Stars plated seven runs in the bottom of the second. Wallis broke the 1-1 tie with an RBI single to right-center field. Chris Muñoz drew a bases-loaded walk, then Davidson scored on a fielder's choice ground ball. Adam Clark, running for Wallis, scored on an error.
OCU went up 8-1 as Jensen hammered a three-run home run that cleared the left center-field wall.
Jonathan Rodriguez smacked a two-run double to deep left to put the Stars ahead 11-1 in the third.
Muñoz nailed a two-run base hit to key a five-run OCU uprising in the fourth. Wallis pounded a two-run homer to left for an 18-1 Stars advantage in the fifth.
Wallis went 4-for-4 with four RBIs, while Muñoz, a senior from Hacienda Heights, Calif., was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs for OCU. Jensen, a senior from Arlington, Texas, went 2-for-5, scored a run and drove in four runs, and Rodriguez, a junior from Anaheim, Calif., brought in four runs.
Derek Howell benefited from OCU's production to get the win. Howell, a senior right-hander from Krum, Texas, allowed one run on four hits and a walk in five innings. Howell (2-1) struck out three. Patrick Goelz finished on the mound, fanning four in the final two innings.
OCU faces Bacone at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Muskogee, Okla.
