Stars bash Benedictine 16-1, 18-3

Josh Dickey drove in seven runs and Forrest Smith plated five to help OCU move to 8-2 on the season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University bashed Benedictine (Kan.) 16-1 and 18-3 in a doubleheader Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars, ranked No. 4 in NAIA baseball, clubbed five home runs and plated 34 runs in two games to improve to 8-2 on the young season.
OCU jumped on top early with a 6-run bottom of the first inning. Cody Ferrell and Chase Jensen each singled to drive in OCU's first three runs. Brayden Brumley and Andrew Dennis each doubled to right field and drove in runs to give OCU a 6-0 lead after one inning.
In the bottom of the second, Forrest Smith crushed a three-run homer over the right-center field fence to make the score 9-0 in favor of the Stars. Dennis closed the inning with an RBI triple to give OCU an 11-0 lead.
Jensen tripled to plate a run in the bottom of the third, and Smith followed with an RBI to make the score 13-0.
Brumley and Smith singled to drive in a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to push OCU's lead to 15-0.
Jonathan Rodriguez capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to right field to make the score 16-1.
Brumley pitched a scoreless top of the seventh to give the Stars the 16-1 victory.
Patrick Goelz tossed five scoreless innings and allowed just three hits and one base on balls. The senior from Palm Bay, Fla., struck out eight batters to pick up the win and move to 2-0 on the season.
Smith went 2-for-4 and drove in five runs to lead the Stars at the dish. Brumley drove in three runs and Dennis, Ferrell and Jensen drove in two runs apiece.
After a Jonathan Sigado sacrifice fly gave OCU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Josh Dickey homered over the left-field fence to drive in three runs and give the Stars a 4-0 lead.
Jensen and Rodriguez each plated a run in the bottom of the second to stretch the OCU lead to 6-0.
Kale Gaden led off the bottom of the forth with a solo blast to right field. Four batters later, Dickey tripled to right center and drove in three more runs to push the OCU lead to 10-1. Ferrell followed with a two-run home run to left field and gave the Stars a 12-1 advantage.
Sigado and Dickey each plated a run in the bottom of the fifth to move OCU's lead to 14-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Walker Davidson tripled to right and scored Trey Summers to make the score 15-1. Later in the inning, Sigado singled to left and plated two more runs to make the Stars' lead 18-1.
Ricky Spain allowed a pair of runs in the top of the seventh but closed the door on Benedictine and gave OCU the 18-3 victory.
Dalton Bernardi allowed two hits and a run in four innings of work. The junior from Choctaw, Okla., struck out three batters to move to 2-0 on the season.
Will Patrigo struck out the three in two scoreless innings of relief.
Dickey finished the game a single short if the cycle and drove in seven runs to lead OCU at the plate. Sigado followed with four RBIs.
The Stars will return to action against MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) at 2 p.m. Friday at Jim Wade Stadium. OCU's game originally scheduled for Wednesday has been canceled.
