Stars split doubleheader with Lubbock Christian

OCU won the first game 5-1 before dropping the second 5-4 in extra innings

Miguel Beltran slugged his 19th home run of the season against Lubbock Christian Friday.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Second-ranked Oklahoma City University split a doubleheader with No. 18 Lubbock Christian (Texas) Friday at Hays Field.
The Stars, ranked No. 2 in NAIA baseball, won 5-1 before dropping the second game 5-4 in extra innings. The spilt moved OCU to 35-8 overall and 22-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
The Stars snatched an early lead in the top of the first inning when Dane Phillips singled up the middle to plate Chris Muñoz from second base and make the score 1-0.
Miguel Beltran blasted his 19th home run of the season in the top of the third to score two runs and give OCU a 3-0 lead.
Kale Gaden led off the top of the fifth with a double to right and was driven in when Muñoz tripled to right to make the score 4-0. Muñoz later scored on a Lubbock Christian error to push the Stars' lead to 5-0.
Rich Hawkins allowed a run in the bottom of the sixth, but struck out Jason Fisch to end the inning and the Lubbock Christian threat and keep the score 5-1.
Beltran turned an unassisted double play at first base in the bottom of the seventh and Hawkins struck out Brent Leslie to finish the game and give OCU the 5-1 victory.
Hawkins struck out four in seven innings of work to move to 10-1 as a starter. The senior lefty allowed one run on nine hits and tossed his seventh complete game of the season.
Beltran went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a home run and Muñoz finished 3-for-4 with three runs to lead OCU at the plate.
OCU scored four runs in the top of the second in game No. 2. Jonathan Sigado drove in Phillips and Gaden scored on a passed ball to make the score 2-0.
Later in the second, Muñoz cleared the bases with a triple to right center to give OCU a 4-0 lead.
Lubbock Christian responded with two runs in the bottom of the second and two more in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the eighth, Jordan Lewis singled down the left-field line off reliever Patrick Goelz to drive in the winning run and give Lubbock Christian the 5-4 win.
Starter Blake Schwartz allowed four runs on six hits and struck out six in 5.1 innings of work. Davis Henderson tossed a scoreless inning in relief and Allen Townsend and Goelz made appearances out of the bullpen.
Muñoz went 2-for-4 at the dish with a pair of RBIs to lead the Stars.
OCU and Lubbock Christian will square off in the third and final game of the series at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hays Field in Lubbock, Texas.
