OCU prevails 12-11 over SNU

Fisher, Muñoz pound home runs as top-ranked Stars win slugfest

BETHANY, Okla. – No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University hung on for a 12-11 win over Southern Nazarene on Tuesday at the Cypert Athletic Complex.
Patrick Goelz, a junior right-hander from Palm Bay, Fla., notched his second save of the year for OCU, top-ranked in NAIA baseball. The Stars improved to 16-4, 7-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Goelz allowed Jacob Inbody's home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning, but retired Southern Nazarene batters in order after that. Goelz struck out Ryan McIntosh to end the game.
Blake Schwartz, a senior righty from Rosemount, Minn., improved to 5-0 on the year. Schwartz fanned six in 5.1 innings for the victory.
The teams played with winds gusting to 30 mph to the south, blowing out to left field.
OCU built a sixth-inning 12-3 advantage. Brian Fisher drove in two runs with an infield single, and Kale Gaden knocked in another run with a base hit for a three-run sixth for the Stars.
The Stars' Miguel Beltran ignited a six-run fifth with a run-scoring single to left. Fisher cranked a three-run home run over the left-field wall, and Chris Muñoz drove in two runs with a single to center.
Muñoz nailed a two-run shot over the left-field wall to put OCU up 2-0 in the first. Cody Ferrell had a sacrifice fly in the second to give the Stars a 3-1 lead.
James Tunnell had an RBI single in the bottom of the second before John Basknight tied the game 3-3 with a homer for SNU.
Southern Nazarene (6-13, 3-5 SAC) scored the last eight runs of the game. Nate Saquilon cut OCU's lead to 12-4 in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly.
Saquilon had a two-run homer to slice SNU's deficit to 12-10 and cap a six-run bottom of the seventh for the Crimson Storm. Riley Morrow, Inbody and Ryan Williams added RBI doubles for SNU.
Fisher, a senior from Spring, Texas, went 3-for-5, scored twice, hit his third homer of the year and drove in five runs. Muñoz, a junior from Hacienda Heights, Calif., was 2-for-6, scored a run, hit his third homer this year and had four RBIs as part of the Stars' 15-hit attack.
Beltran, a senior from Long Beach, Calif., was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Brayden Brumley, a junior from Ardmore, Okla., went 3-for-5 and scored a run. Ferrell and Gaden each had two hits.
OCU faces Mid-America Christian at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Jim Wade Stadium.
