Stars smack Briar Cliff 13-3 and 18-0

OCU scored 31 runs on 35 hits to sweep the doubleheader

Miguel Beltran clubbed four home runs and recorded 10 RBIs in two games against Briar Cliff Saturday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University crushed Briar Cliff (Iowa) 13-3 and 18-0 in a doubleheader Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars, ranked first in NAIA baseball, scored 31 runs and clubbed 35 hits in two games to move to 22-5 on the season.
OCU posted five runs in the bottom of the first and got back-to-back-to-back solo home runs from Chris Muñoz, Dane Phillips and Miguel Beltran to take a 5-0 lead after one inning.
Phillips struck again in the bottom of the second, this time with a three-run homer to right-center field to make the OCU lead 8-0.
The Stars pushed five more runs across in the bottom of third. Beltran started the scoring with a three-run home run to right and Rich Hawkins capped the inning with a two-RBI double to left to put OCU on top 13-0.
Briar Cliff managed a run in the top of the fourth and two more in the top of the seventh, but couldn't get any closer and the Stars picked up the 13-3 victory.
Senior Blake Schwartz tossed five scoreless innings and improved to 6-0 on the season. The right-hander allowed one run on one hit and struck out five batters.
Kyle Lacy and Jerod Peper each tossed an inning in relief. Lacy struck out three and Peper struck out two.
Beltran, Hawkins and Phillips drove in four runs apiece to lead the Stars at the plate.
The OCU bats picked up where they left off in game No. 2, plating six runs in the bottom of the first. Muñoz tripled down the right-field line to drive in a run and Beltran followed with a two-run home run to left center to make the score 3-0.
Later in the inning, Brian Fisher, Hawkins and Brayden Brumley all came through with RBI doubles to extend the lead to 6-0.
OCU put up eight runs in the bottom of the third. Back-to-back RBI singles from Kale Gaden and Muñoz made the score 8-0. Beltran followed with a sacrifice fly to score Gaden from third and make the score 9-0. RBI singles from Chad Carman, Fisher and Brumley pushed the score 14-0 in favor of OCU.
In the bottom of the sixth, Beltran smacked a three-run homer to right and Phillips scored on a double-play ball to make the score 18-0.
Patrick Goelz struck out the side in the top of the seventh to give OCU the 18-0 victory.
Junior Cody Crabaugh struck out four and allowed two hits in five scoreless innings to move to 5-2 in the season. Allen Townsend and Goelz each tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
Beltran finished 2-for-3 with six RBIs, Fisher went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Brumley went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead OCU at the dish.
The Stars will return to action against Briar Cliff for the final game of the series at noon Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium.
