OCU posts 10-0 win over SNU

Top-ranked Stars complete three-game sweep of SAC foe Southern Nazarene

Miguel Beltran hammered his seventh and eighth home runs of the year for OCU on Tuesday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Miguel Beltran cranked two home runs and drove in five runs, while Dane Phillips added a solo blast to power top-ranked Oklahoma City University past Southern Nazarene 10-0 on Tuesday night at Jim Wade Stadium.
Beltran, a senior from Long Beach, Calif., pounded a three-run homer over the right-field wall in the second inning, then added a two-run blast in the sixth for the Stars. OCU, ranked No. 1 in NAIA baseball, improved to 20-5, 11-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Rich Hawkins posted his sixth complete game in seven starts for OCU. Hawkins, a senior left-hander from Edmond, Okla., improved to 6-1 while striking out 10 in seven innings. He needed 81 pitches and an hour and 41 minutes to finish the game. Hawkins also went 3-for-4 with two doubles at the plate.
Hawkins allowed three base runners Tuesday. Ryan McIntosh reached on an error in the second inning, then John Basknight doubled for SNU. Hawkins fanned Luis Hernandez and Josh Riley to strand the runners.
After the error, Hawkins retired 12 Southern Nazarene batters in a row before James Tunnell got on with an error in the sixth.
Phillips, a senior from Nacogdoches, Texas, finished 3-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs, while Chris Muñoz, a junior from Hacienda Heights, Calif., scored three times and went 2-for-2 for OCU.
Cody Ferrell knocked in the Stars' 10th run of the game on a double to left field to score Adam Clark, running for Hawkins after he doubled in the bottom of the seventh.
The Stars built a first-inning 3-0 lead. Phillips knocked in two runs with a base hit through the middle of the infield. Jonathan Sigado put OCU ahead 3-0 on a sacrifice fly.
Kale Gaden and Muñoz drew walks before Beltran nailed a 1-0 pitch past right field. OCU led 6-0 after two innings. Phillips led off the fifth with a shot to right for a 7-0 OCU advantage.
OCU meets Briar Cliff (Iowa) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
