OCU drops 11-9 decision to Bethany

Bethany ends top-ranked Stars' eight-game winning string

Brian Fisher nailed a two-run triple to cut OCU's deficit to 11-9 in the eighth inning Monday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 1-rated Oklahoma City University suffered an 11-9 setback to Bethany (Kan.) on Monday at Jim Wade Stadium.
Bethany (14-5) halted OCU's eight-game win streak. The Stars, top-ranked in NAIA baseball, dropped to 19-5.
OCU rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to cut its deficit to two runs. Brian Fisher pounded a two-run triple to Jim Wade Stadium's left corner. Kale Gaden drove in Fisher with a base hit to right field, making the score 11-9.
Cody Ferrell reached base with an infield hit with one out in the ninth. Ben Gass sewed up his third save of the year for Bethany by retiring OCU on two fly balls.
Kyle Lacy took the loss for the Stars. Will Patrigo threw 3.1 innings and struck out four without giving up an earned run for OCU.
OCU built a 5-0 second-inning lead. Chad Carman had a first-inning RBI single, then Dane Phillips ripped a two-run triple to right field. Fisher knocked in the Stars' fourth run on an infield single. Carman's run-scoring base hit to left put OCU on top 5-0 in the second.
Bethany cut its deficit to 5-3 powered by Jose Rodriguez's two-run home run in the third.
In the fifth, Bethany plated six runs to go ahead 9-5. Bethany took advantage of an error and two bases-loaded walks.
Carman, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Fisher, a senior from Spring, Texas, was 3-for-5 with a run scored and three RBIs.
Ferrell, a junior from McLoud, Okla., finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, and Gaden, a junior from Stillwater, Okla., went 2-for-4 with a run driven in. Jonathan Sigado, a junior from Salem, Ore., was 2-for-5.
The Stars take on Southern Nazarene at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the conclusion of the two teams' three-game Sooner Athletic Conference season series.
