Stars split doubleheader with USAO

OCU took game No. 1 8-5, dropped the second 4-2

Chad Carman hit his second home run of the season against USAO Saturday.
CHICKASHA, Okla. – No. 1 Oklahoma City University split a doubleheader with USAO, winning the first game 8-5 and dropping the second 4-2 Saturday at Bill Smith Ballpark.
The split moves the Stars to 11-4 on the young season and 3-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Junior Cody Ferrell drove the first pitch of the day over the left-field fence to put OCU on top 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Three batters later senior Miguel Beltran homered to left center to give the Stars a 2-0 lead.
Right fielder Dane Phillips led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run to make the score 3-1. Later in the inning Kale Gaden got into the act with a two-run blast to right center field to push the OCU lead to 5-1.
Seniors Chad Carman and Brian Fisher added solo home runs in the sixth and seventh innings respectively and the Stars took the first game 8-5.
Starting pitcher Rich Hawkins picked up the win to improve to 3-1 on the season. Hawkins surrendered five runs on 10 hits and struck out eight in seven innings of work.
Beltran led the way at the dish going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Gaden drove in two runs and finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
The USAO pitching staff held the OCU bats in check through four innings of game No. 2 and USAO owned a 4-0 lead heading to the fifth inning.
Fisher drew a lead-off walk in the top of the fifth. Two batters Ferrell singled to left to move Fisher to second. Phillips plated Fisher and Ferrell with a two-out double to left center to cut the USAO lead to 4-2.
OCU came up empty in the sixth and seventh innings and USAO came away with the 4-2 win.
Junior Cody Crabaugh was credited with the loss and moves to 2-2 on the season. Crabaugh pitched 2.1 innings, gave up four runs on three hits and struck out three.
Davis Henderson tossed 2.2 scoreless innings and Patrick Goelz pitched one inning with two strikeouts.
Phillips drove in both OCU runs and finished 1-for-1 at the plate.
The Stars will return to action against Oklahoma Wesleyan at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jim Wade Stadium.
