OCU hammers USAO 12-2

Top-ranked Stars crank out 15 hits to take second league win of year

Blake Schwartz notched his third victory of the season Thursday against USAO.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University crushed USAO 12-2 on Thursday at Jim Wade Stadium.
Dane Phillips had three hits to key a 15-hit attack, and Blake Schwartz moved to 3-0 for OCU. The Stars, ranked No. 1 in NAIA baseball, improved to 10-3, 2-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while USAO fell to 8-6, 0-1 in league play.
Phillips, a junior from Nacogdoches, Texas, went 3-for-5, scored twice, nailed a double and drove in a run for the Stars. Brian Fisher, a senior from Spring, Texas, was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Chad Carman, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Brayden Brumley, a junior from Ardmore, Okla., was 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Cody Ferrell, a junior from McLoud, Okla., went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI for the Stars.
Schwartz, a senior right-hander from Rosemount, Minn., allowed two runs on two hits and four walks in seven innings. He struck out five while throwing 105 pitches. Allen Townsend finished up on the mound for OCU with a 1-2-3 eighth.
The Stars went ahead 2-0 in the first. Phillips socked a run-scoring single to right field, and Fisher got hit by pitch with the bases loaded. USAO cut OCU's lead to 2-1 on Newt Compton's RBI base hit in the fourth.
OCU increased its advantage to 5-1 in the fifth. Miguel Beltran brought in a run on a groundout, then Carman knocked in a run on a single to right. Kale Gaden followed with an RBI double into the right center-field gap.
USAO scored in the top of the seventh, and the Stars responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. The Stars took advantage of two USAO errors to score twice. Rich Hawkins nailed an RBI base hit to right, and Ferrell plated a run on a fielder's-choice grounder.
Fisher added an RBI single in the eighth before Brumley finished the game by pounding a run-scoring base hit along the left-field foul line.
OCU completes its three-game SAC set with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against USAO on Saturday in Chickasha, Okla.
