Hawkins' pitching aids OCU to 7-2 win over Bellevue

No. 1-ranked Stars go to 7-3, including 4-2 loss to MidAmerica Nazarene on Saturday

Rich Hawkins has finished six of his 14 career starts for the Stars.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Rich Hawkins posted his third complete game in as many starts in top-ranked Oklahoma City University's 7-2 victory over Bellevue (Neb.) on Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars, ranked No. 1 in NAIA baseball, fell to MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) 4-2 earlier Saturday. OCU went to 7-3 on the year.
Hawkins, a senior left-hander from Edmond, Okla., struck out six and permitted six hits and two walks. He logged 105 pitches. On the year, Hawkins has a 2.14 earned run average and 19 strikeouts in 21 innings.
The Stars took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jonathan Sigado drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single to left field. Chris Muñoz knocked in another run with a base hit to right, then Miguel Beltran drew a bases-full walk.
Bellevue tied the game 2-2 on Dan Smolinski's two-run home run in the top of the fourth.
OCU finished the first inning up 2-0 thanks to Dane Phillips' RBI double and Chad Carman's run-scoring base hit.
Hawkins helped himself with an RBI base hit in the fifth. Kale Gaden completed OCU's scoring with a sixth-inning solo homer to right.
Gaden, a junior from Stillwater, Okla., pounded his second homer of the year while going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sigado, a junior from Salem, Ore., went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Muñoz, a junior from Hacienda Heights, Calif., and Phillips, a junior from Nacogdoches, Texas, each went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run driven in.
Kyle Segraves put MidAmerica Nazarene ahead 3-0 in the second inning of the early game. Derek Glenn scored on a double play in the fifth to provide MidAmerica Nazarene a fourth run.
Brian Fisher cut OCU's deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the second with a two-run double to the right-center field gap.
Allen Townsend, a senior lefty from San Diego, took the loss for OCU. Townsend fanned nine in a complete-game effort.
Stars pitching has combined for a 2.75 ERA through nine games.
OCU meets Bellevue at noon Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium.
