OCU downs Southern Nazarene 8-4

The Stars score six runs in the first inning and improve to 6-1 on the season

Miguel Beltran slugged his third homerun of the sesaon against Southern Nazarene.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University slugged out an 8-4 win in its Sooner Athletic Conference opener over Southern Nazarene Thursday at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars hung six runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning and senior pitcher Blake Schwartz struck out seven to improve to 6-1 on the season.
After a three up, three down bottom of the first, OCU got four straight base hits including an RBI single from Dane Phillips and a 2-RBI double from Chad Carman to give the Stars a 3-0 lead.
Later in the inning Brayden Brumley drove in two more runs on a two-out single up the middle and Brian Fisher scored on a Southern Nazarene error to push the Stars' lead to 6-0.
The Crimson Storm managed runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to cut the OCU lead to 6-3. The Stars added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half of the sixth on solo homeruns by Phillips and Miguel Beltran to make the score 8-3.
Southern Nazarene pushed another run across in the top of the eighth to make the score 8-4, but that was as close as the score would get. Reliever Patrick Goelz retired the side in order in the top of the ninth to give OCU the 8-4 victory.
Schwartz picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the season. The right hander from Rosemount, Minn., gave up three runs on three hits in six innings of work and struck out seven.
Davis Henderson threw two innings with two strikeouts and Goelz pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Carman and Phillips led the way at the dish, both going 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and Brumley finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
The Stars will take the field against MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) at 2 p.m. Friday at Jim Wade Stadium.
