Stars split pair with Missouri Baptist

OCU falls 2-1 in Game 1, Schwartz strikes out 10 in 9-1 Game 2 win

Rich Hawkins drove in a run and struck out six against Missouri Baptist.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University split a doubleheader with No. 15 Missouri Baptist on Friday at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars, ranked No. 1 in NAIA baseball, dropped the first game 2-1 but picked up a 9-1 win in the second game behind a 10-strikeout performance from Blake Schwartz to move to 5-1 on the season.
After four scoreless innings, Missouri Baptist got on the scoreboard first in the top of the fifth inning with a pair of RBI doubles to take a 2-0 lead in game one.
The Stars cut the Missouri Baptist lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh after Rich Hawkins doubled to center field and drove in Kale Gaden. That was as close as OCU would get and Missouri Baptist took the 2-1 win.
Hawkins pitched seven innings and gave up two runs on three hits. The senior lefty struck out six batters and drove in the Stars only run of the game.
In the second game, Chad Carman put the Stars on top in the bottom of the first with a two-RBI double to left center. Later in the inning Brian Fisher singled up the middle to give OCU a 3-0 lead.
The OCU bats stayed hot in the bottom of the second pushing across four more runs. Fisher and Dane Phillips each drove in a run in the inning to give the Stars a 7-0 lead.
Jonathan Sigado drove in two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to push the OCU lead to 9-0.
Missouri Baptist managed to score a run in the top of the sixth but Patrick Goelz induced a ground ball to end the inning. Goelz struck out the side in the top of the seventh to give the Stars the 9-1 Victory.
Schwartz threw five shutout innings, struck out 10 and allowed one hit to pick up the win. Goelz threw two innings, struck out three and gave up one run.
Carman drove in three runs to lead the way at the dish. Fisher went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Sigado finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
OCU's game against Missouri Baptist originally scheduled for Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium will not be played. The Stars will begin league play against Southern Nazarene at 2 p.m. Thursday at Jim Wade Stadium.
