Stars striving for stunt championships

Two OCU stunt groups ranked in top 10 in nation

ORLANDO, Fla. – Oklahoma City University spirit squad will send two top-10 all-girl stunt teams to compete in the Universal Cheerleaders Association College Cheerleading Team National Championships on Jan. 13-15 at the Walt Disney World Resort.
The team of Lisa Reichardt, D'Lora Rogers, Erica Spicer and Haley Tannery enters the competition with the No. 2 ranking and the team of Alicia Clifton, Alex Miller, Savannah Owen and Jamie Lu Sheppard hold the No. 8 ranking.
“I think both teams will go top five,” OCU coach Brandy Corcoran said. “The hardest part about stunt is you can have one little mistake, and it can knock you from fifth place all the way down to 10th, so you have to be consistent.
“It's a stressful trip. It's hard when you have two teams competing against each other. In an ideal world it would be great if we could tie for first or even finish one and two, but it takes a little time to get used to, and I think that is the most challenging part.”
Miller, Owen and Sheppard teamed up to finish second in the competition a year ago.
“It was our first time to compete in group stunt and it was refreshing,” Corcoran said. “That is where we figured out what our balance needs to be. Our routines have to be difficult but not too over the top.”

OCU will host the NAIA West Qualifying Group Cheer/Dance Championships on Feb. 11 at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU captured the first NAIA championships awarded in cheerleading and pom last season.
