LEWISTON, Idaho – Lubbock Christian (Texas) knocked Oklahoma City University into the losers bracket of the NAIA World Series 8-1 on Monday at Harris Field.
The second-ranked Stars (47-11) face Concordia (Calif.) at 5 p.m. Oklahoma time Tuesday, while ninth-ranked Lubbock Christian (48-12) will meet LSU-Shreveport at 9 p.m. Tuesday.
OCU managed four hits as Chad Carman led with a 2-for-4 performance. Scott Dalrymple contributed a double, while Julien Pollard had the Stars' other hit.
Lubbock Christian's Tyler Curtis equaled an NAIA World Series record by fanning seven in a row. He struck out the side in the sixth and the seventh while striking out the first batter he saw in the eighth. Curtis allowed one hit in 3.1 innings in getting the win.
The Stars scored their run in the fifth inning on Ruben Sosa's sacrifice fly to left field. Dalrymple belted a double to right-center field to put runners on second and third base for Sosa. OCU drew two walks in the fourth, but came up empty as Tyler Rogers struck out two batters.
Lubbock Christian built a 5-0 advantage through two innings. Richard Bohlken cranked a two-run home run over the right-center field wall with two out in the first inning for Lubbock Christian's first runs.
In the second, David Cruz added a sacrifice fly, then Ryan Burnaman and Ryan Meade chipped in RBI singles to put Lubbock Christian ahead 5-0.
Lubbock Christian plated three runs in the sixth, using an error to go ahead 6-1. Chandler Griffin nailed a two-run base hit to right to up the score to 8-1.
OCU starting pitcher Rich Hawkins left the game after he allowed five runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings. Cody Crabaugh followed Hawkins and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the third by getting Brent Leslie to ground into a 6-4-3 double play. Crabaugh pitched four innings and allowed three unearned runs on five hits.
