Stars take second seed in NAIA World Series

OCU to make 13th World Series appearance

Matt Presley has hit .336 with six home runs and 34 RBIs this year.

LEWISTON, Idaho – Oklahoma City University will be the second seed in the NAIA World Series and play 9 p.m. Oklahoma time May 28 at Harris Field.

Seventh-seeded host Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) and 10th seed Tennessee Wesleyan meet 9:30 p.m. Central time May 27 with the winner taking on the second-ranked Stars (46-10).

The Stars will be making their fourth consecutive appearance in the NAIA World Series, putting together its second string of four World Series trips in a row after making the Series from 2002-05. OCU made every national championship game in those previous four trips, winning the national championship in 2005.

OCU has made the NAIA World Series in 1986, 1988, 1992, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010 and now, 2011. OCU owns the most wins in college baseball since 1991, 12 consecutive 50-win seasons and 16 40-win campaigns in a row.

The Stars posted double-figure run totals each game en route to winning the NAIA Championship Opening Round Oklahoma City Bracket.
"Our guys have mental toughness," OCU coach Denney Crabaugh said. "I've said more than once this team is a group of grinders. The thing I most respect about this team is their ability to find ways to win. It's a character thing."

Kirk Walker, a senior from Bakersfield, Calif., has hit .438 with 24 doubles, eight home runs, 72 RBIs and 16 stolen bases, while Ruben Sosa, a junior from Lawrence, Mass., has added a .394 average, 14 doubles, five triples, five homers, 41 RBIs and 43 steals for OCU.
Rich Hawkins, a junior left-hander from Edmond, Okla., has gone 10-4 with a 1.53 earned run average, three complete games, two shutouts and 60 strikeouts in 82.1 innings pitched for the Stars.

Austin Messerli, a senior from Norman, Okla., led the Stars in the Opening Round with a .533 average, eight hits, three doubles and seven RBIs. OCU hit .350 with 35 runs, 41 hits, 12 doubles and 31 RBIs in its three Opening Round games.
Walker will make his fourth trip to the NAIA World Series, becoming the second Star to ever be part of four World Series teams.
"I know what the atmosphere will be like," Walker said. "There will be 6,000 people in the stands. You have to be yourself and still play the game. I've watched a couple of teams celebrate on that field. I just want to bring back a ring."

OCU leads the NAIA with 696 hits, 12.43 hits a game, 146 doubles and a .976 fielding percentage while ranking second in batting average (.359) and doubles per game (2.61). The Stars have pounded 1.34 home runs a game, good for fifth in the NAIA.

No. 4 LSU Shreveport (La.) will battle No. 5 Lee (Tenn.) at 2 p.m. in the second game of the day. No. 3 Oklahoma Baptist and No. 6 Lubbock Christian (Texas) follow at 5 p.m.
