OCU nips Mid-America 10-9 in 10 innings

Teams trade lead five times before Stars take series from Mid-America

Rich Hawkins earned the victory in relief Saturday.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pulled out a 10-9 win over Mid-America Christian in 10 innings Saturday at the James Curtis Complex.

Julien Pollard scored the winning run on Emmanuel Jiminian's throwing error with two out in the 10th for OCU. The Stars, ranked third in NAIA baseball, moved to 35-7, 22-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

With Pollard on second base and Scott Dalrymple at first, Mark Purser grounded to Mid-America shortstop Luis Martinez, who threw to Jiminian to force Dalrymple out at second base. Jiminian attempted to get Pollard as well, but committed an error to let Pollard score.

Pollard reached base with a base hit to right field. Right fielder Justin Rivera misplayed Pollard's single to allow Pollard to get to second. Dalrymple got on via an intentional walk.

Mid-America Christian forced extra innings as Jose Flores drove in the tying run with a double in the eighth. Mid-America loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but OCU's Rich Hawkins got Martinez to ground into a 1-2-3 double play to retire the side.

The lead changed hands five times in the game. Pollard drove in the Stars' first run on a double to left in the first. Mid-America Christian scored the game's next four runs.

OCU tied the game 4-4 in the third as Dearth Parker scored on a wild pitch and Austin Messerli had a two-run double.

The Stars took the lead on Ruben Sosa's home run to left leading off the fourth. Kirk Walker added a two-run blast to left in the inning. Mid-America took an 8-7 edge by plating four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Sosa tied the game 8-8 with an RBI double in the seventh. Chad Carman reached home plate on a wild pitch to give OCU a 9-8 lead.

Hawkins picked up the win by keeping Mid-America scoreless the final 2.1 innings of the game. Hawkins, a junior left-hander from Edmond, Okla., improved to 7-3.

Pollard, a senior from Tacoma, Wash., went 3-for-3, scored twice and drove in a run for OCU. Messerli, a senior from Norman, Okla., was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, and Sosa, a junior from Lawrence, Mass., went 2-for-6 with a run scored and two runs driven in. Sosa hit his third homer this year, while Walker went deep for the seventh time in 2011.

The Stars meet Northwood (Texas) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday at Jim Wade Stadium.
