PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University took both ends of a Sooner Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Wayland Baptist (Texas) 5-3, 12-2 on Friday at Wilder Field.
The Stars, ranked seventh in the NAIA, moved to 9-2, 3-0 in the SAC. Scott Dalrymple, Julien Pollard and Mark Purser each pounded home runs for OCU on Friday.
In the first game, OCU overcame a 3-2 seventh-inning deficit to win. Purser led off the top of the seventh with a solo blast over the left-field wall. With two out, Pollard nailed an RBI double to right-center field for the go-ahead run, then Miguel Beltran added a run-scoring double down the right-field foul line.
Beltran drove in OCU's first run with an infield single in the first. Dalrymple put the Stars up 2-1 in the fourth with an RBI double, but Wayland Baptist answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Beltran, a junior from Long Beach, Calif., went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Sosa, a junior from Lawrence, Mass., was 2-for-3 and scored twice.
Corey Theriot, a senior from Iowa, La., allowed three runs on six hits with six strikeouts in six innings to pick up his third win of the year. Cody Crabaugh, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., notched a save by working the bottom of the seventh.
Miguel Pagan started the bottom of the seventh with a double, but Crabaugh responded by striking out Kevin Hennessey. Nick Noll lined out to third base, then Crabaugh fanned Brian Embery.
In the second game, Pollard put OCU up 3-0 in the first with a three-run homer past the left-field wall. Beltran and Dalrymple added run-scoring base hits to put the Stars up 5-0 after the top of the first.
Dalrymple cranked a 3-0 offering over the left-field wall for a solo shot in the third.
Dearth Parker touched off a six-run Stars seventh by bringing Purser home with a sacrifice bunt. Terrance Jackson scored off Sosa's infield hit, and Beltran added an RBI single. Chad Carman drove in two runs with a single to left, then pinch runner Randy Vann scored on an error.
Carman, a junior from Midwest City, Okla., was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Dalrymple, a senior from Beaverton, Ore., went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Beltran went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run driven in, while Sosa was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Pollard, a senior from Tacoma, Wash., drove in three runs.
Allen Townsend, a junior from San Diego, notched his first victory as a Star. Townsend permitted two runs on five hits while striking out four in six innings.
OCU meets Wayland Baptist at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilder Field.
