OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University took a doubleheader from MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) 7-6 and 13-2 on Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars, ranked seventh in NAIA baseball, swept the three-game series against MidAmerica Nazarene. OCU improved to 5-2 on the year.
In the first game, Matt Presley crushed a two-run home run over the left-center field wall in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally OCU to victory. Kirk Walker singled to lead off the inning for the Stars.
David Hamlett drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh to give MidAmerica Nazarene a 6-5 edge. Cody Crabaugh got OCU out of the inning on a called third strike against Josh Greer. Crabaugh, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., earned the victory to move to 2-0 this year.
Mark Purser nailed an RBI double to break a 2-2 fifth-inning tie and put OCU ahead. Purser eventually scored on an error. In the sixth, the Stars went up 5-2 when Brian Fisher reached home on Ruben Sosa's fielder's choice grounder.
Presley cranked a two-run homer in the first. Presley, a senior from Colorado Springs, Colo., finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four runs driven in.
Purser, a senior from Spokane, Wash., went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Terrance Jackson, a senior from Greenville, Ala., was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
In the second game, the Stars plated seven runs in the third en route to the win. Sosa and Julien Pollard each had two-run singles, while Purser, Walker and Scott Dalrymple also banged out run-scoring base hits.
Miguel Beltran got OCU on the board with a first-inning RBI single. Fisher swatted a two-run, second-inning double, then Beltran added a run-scoring double to put OCU on top 4-0.
Fisher and Walker completed OCU's scoring with sacrifice flies in the fourth.
Beltran, a junior from Long Beach, Calif., went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Sosa, a junior from Lawrence, Mass., was 2-for-2 with four runs scored and two runs driven in. Pollard, a senior from Tacoma, Wash., went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Purser went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Dalrymple, a senior from Beaverton, Ore., was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Fisher, a junior from Spring, Texas, drove in three runs.
Clint Maune, a senior from El Reno, Okla., took advantage of OCU's run explosion to get the win. Maune struck out five in four innings.
The Stars face Avila (Mo.) at 1 p.m. Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium.
