OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University opened the 2010 women's soccer home campaign with a 4-0 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday at Stars Field.
OCU (3-2) recorded its second shutout on the year with a staunch defensive effort in the match, allowing only one shot. The Stars outshot Southwestern 18-1. The offense featured two second-period goals from Meghan McMahon, a freshman from Oklahoma City.
“It's always nice to bounce back after losing to two NCAA Division II opponents,” OCU coach Brian Harvey said. “We played another Division II team, and got a win that was thoroughly deserved.”
The first goal of the match came off the foot of Malin Andersson, a senior from Huskvarna, Sweden, with credit for the assist going to Alex Miley, team captain and senior from Edmond, Okla.
“I thought Alex Miley played the captain's role out there tonight,” said Harvey. “She had a well-played match throughout.”
The next goal came three minutes into the second half, when Blerta Rashica, a freshman from Orebro, Sweden, booted in the goal with an assist off a well-placed cross from Andersson.
The final two goals belonged to McMahon. Her first, in the 79th minute of play, came when Josefine Holmgren, a senior from Huskvarna, Sweden, pushed the ball up the field to a streaking McMahon. She then beat the defender and keeper to punch in the score.
McMahon notched her second score of the game and seventh of the season in the 81st minute, an unassisted effort.
“Our goal was to be undefeated at home this year and we did so very convincingly tonight, so it's a good start to a season,” said Harvey.
OCU will next play on Saturday as the Stars host Texas Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
