OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City scored a 3-0 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State and advanced to the semifinal round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Wednesday night.
Â
With the result, third-seeded OCU plays at second-seeded USAO in Chickasha at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Â
While not playing up to their standards, the Stars stayed formidable defensively.
Â
"I think we all know we didn't have our best performance tonight," said OCU Head Coach
Billy Martin. "I think this was one of our poorest games of the season, which is good because you are always going to have one. You hate to wait till the playoffs, but we defended very well. We never looked like we were going to get scored on. And then the second half, we scored a couple of goals and made it look a little bit comfortable."
The Stars went ahead on an own goal in the 41
st minute of the game.
Â
That score stood until
Yami Ponce headed in a corner kick by
Reese Roberts in the 81
st minute for a 2-0 lead.
Â
Roberts was on the giving end again, less than two minutes later, when her direct kick found
Saizlee Carlton, who played the ball home flawlessly for the 3-0 lead.
Â
OCU keeper
Candela Blanco needed only one save to gain the shutout.
Â
The Stars had 12 shots on goal by 10 different players. Ponce and Carlson had two each.
