OCU crushes Oklahoma Christian 17-4

Steve Vitale tied his career high with six runs driven in Saturday.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University finished off a three-game series sweep of Oklahoma Christian with a 17-4 romp Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.

Steve Vitale, a senior from East Meadow, N.Y., went 2-for-4, scored twice and drove in six runs to pace OCU. The Stars, ranked third in NAIA baseball, moved to 30-6, 14-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

OCU pounded out 14 hits. Kirk Walker, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., went 2-for-4, scored four times and drove in a run, while Mark Purser, a junior from Spokane, Wash., went 2-for-4 with three runs scored for the Stars.

Drew McAdoo nailed a grand slam and drove in five runs, Brian Fisher went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Garrett Regan was 2-for-4 with a home run. Terrance Jackson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs for OCU.

Jackson, a junior from Greenville, Ala., also picked up the victory. Jackson (4-1) struck out three in five innings.

Jackson worked out of a first-inning, one-out bases-loaded jam. Jackson fanned Zac Coshow, then got Jeff Davis to ground out to get out of the inning. Jackson kept Oklahoma Christian off the scoreboard until the fourth.
Zac Coplon also faced a bases-loaded situation in the sixth. After Oklahoma Christian scored on a grounder and Jay White walked, Coplon helped turn a 1-2-3 double play – one of four OCU turned on the day.

The Stars exploded for seven runs in the fifth. Jackson doubled in two runs. After Walker reached on a fielder's choice, Vitale walked to load the bases. McAdoo pounded the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall. Fisher added an RBI single.

OCU scored in every inning. Walker reached home in the first on a wild pitch for OCU's first run, then Vitale brought in another run on a groundout.

Walker had an RBI base hit, and Vitale crushed a double off the center-field wall to bring in two more runs in the second. Regan led off the third with a solo shot over the left-field wall. McAdoo had a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Vitale nailed a three-run blast to right in the sixth.

OCU meets Oklahoma Baptist at 6 p.m. Thursday in Shawnee, Okla.
