LUBBOCK, Texas – Lubbock Christian (Texas) swept a doubleheader from Oklahoma City University 23-9 and 21-11 on Friday at Hays Field in a clash of top 10-ranked teams in NAIA baseball.
Seventh-ranked Lubbock Christian (35-10, 18-4 Sooner Athletic Conference) closed to within a half game of the third-ranked Stars (36-10, 19-4) in the conference standings.
Lubbock Christian built a 23-0 lead in the first game. Joe Staley's three-run home run, Ross Blondin's solo shot and Richard Bohlen's two-run blast pushed Lubbock Christian out to a 6-0 first-inning advantage.
Marc Gomez and Blondin nailed grand slams as Lubbock Christian had a 23-0 lead after two innings.
The Stars mounted a third-inning rally as Kirk Walker hammered a three-run homer and Garrett Regan hit an RBI double.
In the fifth, Chad Carman swatted a solo homer, then Brian Fisher hammered an RBI double to right-center field. Mark Purser had a run-scoring single, and Walker added a two-run double.
Walker went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, while Purser was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Carman went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Dustin Williams took the loss and went to 9-2.
In the second game, OCU tied the game twice before Lubbock Christian finished the game with a 10-run fifth inning.
The Stars tied the game in the third using an eight-run inning. Fisher's three-run homer made the game 8-8.
Terrance Jackson got the Stars rolling with a sacrifice fly. Walker had a run-scoring base hit, then Matt Presley drew a bases-loaded walk. Purser brought in two more runs on a single to left.
Fisher's two-run blast knotted the game at 11-11 in the top of the fifth.
Lubbock Christian answered as David Cruz provided the big blow on a three-run homer. Doug Kroll's RBI single finished the game.
Fisher went 3-for-3 and drove in five runs. Walker went 2-for-4, scored twice and had an RBI.
Zac Coplon was saddled with the loss, moving to 0-2.
The two teams conclude their three-game set 1 p.m. Saturday at Hays Field.
