SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University scored eight times in the ninth inning to post a 13-2 romp against St. Gregory's on Thursday afternoon at Bill Nicklas Field.
The Stars, ranked third in NAIA baseball, clobbered St. Gregory's pitching for 18 hits in the game, led by three hits apiece from Terrance Jackson, Kirk Walker and Chad Carman. OCU improved to 34-8, 17-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Carman, a sophomore from Midwest City, Okla., had two doubles and drove in four runs on the day, while Jackson, a junior from Greenville, Ala., recorded three doubles and scored twice. Walker, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., scored four runs and had two RBIs.
Dearth Parker, a junior from Roff, Okla., connected for a three-run homer in the ninth to spark an eight-run inning. Carman had a two-RBI double down the left-field, then Brian Fisher drove in a run with a double to the right-center gap. Austin Messerli capped the scoring with an RBI single to left field.
OCU starter Dustin Williams struck out 12 batters over eight innings to earn the victory. Williams, a senior right-hander from Norman, Okla., scattered two runs and three hits over eight frames, throwing 119 pitches, to improve to 9-1 on the season. Brad Riddle, a senior from Bethany, Okla., came on in the ninth and recorded two strikeouts to finish off the game.
OCU tallied a run in each of the first three innings to build an early 3-0 lead. Jackson led off the game with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Walker.
In the second inning, Nathan Bryan hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Matt Presley and give the Stars a 2-0 advantage. Walker doubled in the third inning and came around to score on an RBI single from Carman.
OCU will host St. Gregory's on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Jim Wade Stadium.
