Stars split doubleheader with No. 19 Cumberland

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pounded three home runs to defeat No. 19 Cumberland (Tenn.) 10-7 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.

The Stars, ranked third in NAIA baseball, dropped the first game 6-2 in a battle of top-20 teams. OCU moved to 16-3 on the season.

OCU built an early 8-0 advantage after two innings in game two. Steve Vitale, a senior from East Meadow, N.Y., put OCU on the board with a two-run shot over the right-field wall in the bottom of the first inning. The Stars added another run in the inning on a double by Kirk Walker plating Garrett Regan.

In the second inning, OCU scored five runs on four hits and capitalized on two Cumberland errors. Dearth Parker, a junior from Roff, Okla., had the big hit with a three-run blast to left-field, giving OCU a 6-0 advantage. Walker, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., singled to right-field to score Matt Presley and give the Stars an 8-0 lead.

Walker added a solo shot in the in the fourth inning to put OCU up 9-1. Walker finished game two 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Clint Maune, a junior from Yukon, Okla., pitched five innings, allowing five runs on five hits and striking out six to improve to 2-0 on the year.

In game one, OCU managed only six hits and two runs against Cumberland pitcher Shawn Schaefer. Schaefer moved to 3-0 after recording eight strike outs in seven innings of work.

Cumberland knocked out two home runs off OCU pitcher Dustin Williams in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. Williams, a senior from Norman, Okla., settled in and pitched all seven innings for OCU in a losing effort. Williams allowed six runs on six hits and struck out 10 batters.

Chad Carman and Vitale each went 2-for-3 for OCU. Carman, a sophomore from Midwest City, drilled a two-run double off the left-field wall in the sixth inning to cut the Cumberland lead to 6-2.

OCU will take on Cumberland Sunday in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Jim Wade Stadium.
